Every number needs a source, a date, and a scope.
Our method is designed to make a legal-data claim reproducible—not merely persuasive.
We begin with primary sources
Federal MDL totals come from the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. Procedural developments should be supported by court orders, docket entries, or official administrator documents. Agency claims should link to the relevant agency.
We preserve the report date
A case count without an as-of date is incomplete. Our launch dataset uses the JPML report dated August 3, 2026. When the next monthly report is published, we reconcile the current and prior values and update the visible date.
We define what the number counts
“Actions pending” is a federal docket measure. It is not necessarily the number of injured people, approved claimants, state-court cases, unfiled claims, or future settlement participants. We keep those concepts separate.
We label uncertainty
Verified events, allegations, third-party estimates, and our analysis are distinct categories. A proposed or tentative resolution is not described as final. A marketing estimate is not described as an average payout.
We correct transparently
Material corrections should identify what changed and when. Routine monthly case-count updates replace the prior snapshot while preserving a dated update record in the publishing journal.
